WHAT IS THANKSGIVING?

Thanksgiving is the intentional and heartfelt acknowledgement of who God is, what He has done, and what He continues to do in our lives.

It is more than a polite reaction to a positive event. Biblical thanksgiving is a deliberate spiritual response to God, whether circumstances are favourable or difficult.

1. Thanksgiving Is an Act of the Will

Thanksgiving is a conscious decision. We do not thank God only when everything is going well; we choose to give thanks because God remains faithful.

Your circumstances may change, but God does not change.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 - "In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

2. Thanksgiving Is a Potent Spiritual Law

Thanksgiving activates a spiritual principle: when we acknowledge God as our source, we position ourselves to experience more of His grace, favour, and provision.

Thanksgiving says, "Lord, I know where my help comes from."

Psalm 121:1-2

3. Thanksgiving Is a Spiritual Currency

We use thanksgiving to transact with heaven. It is one of the ways believers respond to the goodness, faithfulness, provision, protection, and mercy of God.

Prayer asks; thanksgiving acknowledges the One who answers.

Philippians 4:6 teaches us to present our requests to God "with thanksgiving."

4. Thanksgiving Shifts Our Perspective

Thanksgiving shifts our focus from temporary earthly problems to the eternal character of God.

Instead of concentrating only on what is missing, thanksgiving reminds us of what God has already done.

When you remember the greatness of God, your problem begins to lose its power over your perspective.

5. Thanksgiving Creates an Atmosphere for Miracles

Thanksgiving is the spiritual atmosphere in which miracles are born.

Jesus repeatedly gave thanks before supernatural manifestations.

Thanksgiving does not wait for multiplication; sometimes thanksgiving comes before the multiplication.

John 6:11 - Before multiplying the five loaves and two fish, Jesus gave thanks.

6. Thanksgiving Is the Protocol to God's Presence

We enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise.

Thanksgiving prepares the heart to encounter God.

Before complaining about what you do not have, remember what God has already given you.

Psalm 100:4

7. Thanksgiving Is a Master Key to Victorious Christian Living

A thankful Christian is difficult for discouragement, bitterness, and hopelessness to control.

Thanksgiving keeps your spiritual life healthy.

Colossians 2:6-7 teaches believers to be rooted and built up in Christ, established in faith, and abounding therein with thanksgiving.

8. Thanksgiving Is Proof That You Have Not Forgotten

Thanksgiving is evidence that you remember.

Never become so familiar with God's blessings that you stop appreciating them.

Psalm 103:2 - "Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits."

• Where God brought you from.

• The prayers He answered.

• The battles He fought for you.

• The doors He opened.

• The dangers He protected you from.

• The people He brought into your life.

• Do not forget His benefits.

9. Thanksgiving Is a Game Changer

Thanksgiving can change the atmosphere around your life.

Your situation may not change immediately, but thanksgiving first changes you.

• Complaining into worship.

• Fear into faith.

• Anxiety into peace.

• Discouragement into hope.

• Defeat into expectation.

• Bitterness into gratitude.

10. Thanksgiving Brings Multiplication

What you appreciate increases.

Jesus took the little that was available, gave thanks, and it multiplied.

Never despise what appears small. Thank God for the little, and trust Him with the multiplication.

John 6:11-13

11. Thanksgiving Is a Weapon of Spiritual Battle

Thanksgiving is not weakness; it is warfare.

In difficult seasons, thanksgiving declares that the enemy has not succeeded in taking away your faith in God.

Sometimes your greatest weapon is simply saying, "Lord, I thank You."

2 Chronicles 20:21-22 - Jehoshaphat appointed singers to praise God ahead of the army. As they began to sing and praise, God fought their enemies.

• The Blood of Jesus - Revelation 12:11.

• The Word of God - Ephesians 6:17.

• Prayer - Ephesians 6:18.

• Praise and thanksgiving - Psalm 149:6-9.

• Holy Communion, through which believers remember and proclaim Christ's sacrifice - 1 Corinthians 11:23-26.

12. Thanksgiving Positions Us for Restoration

Thanksgiving helps us recover the right spiritual posture after loss.

Instead of allowing loss to produce permanent bitterness, thanksgiving keeps our confidence in the God who restores.

Thanksgiving declares, "What I lost is not greater than the God I serve."

Joel 2:25 - "And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten..."

13. Thanksgiving Is a Catalyst

A catalyst causes something to happen or accelerates a process.

Jesus gave thanks, and multiplication followed.

Thanksgiving prepares the heart for divine intervention and creates expectation for what God is about to do.

John 6:11

14. Thanksgiving Is an Expression of Humility

Everything we have ultimately comes from God.

Pride says, "I did it." Humility says, "God helped me."

1 Corinthians 4:7 - "And what hast thou that thou didst not receive?"

• I did not get here by myself.

• My strength is from God.

• My opportunities are from God.

• My life is from God.

• My abilities are gifts from God.

15. Thanksgiving Is Like a Sweet Perfume Before God

A thankful heart is precious before God.

Just as a sweet fragrance fills a room, genuine thanksgiving creates an atmosphere of worship around the believer.

Psalm 69:30-31 - "I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving."

16. Thanksgiving Is an Incubator of God's Peace

Thanksgiving creates an environment in which the peace of God can rule in our hearts.

Philippians 4:6-7 also teaches that when prayer and supplication are accompanied by thanksgiving, the peace of God guards our hearts and minds.

When anxiety rises, increase your thanksgiving.

Colossians 3:15 - "...and be ye thankful."

17. Thanksgiving Opens Closed Doors

Paul and Silas were imprisoned, beaten, and chained. Yet at midnight they prayed and sang praises to God.

Praise and thanksgiving can rise from a prison before the door opens.

Do not wait until the door opens to praise God.

Acts 16:25-26

• There was a great earthquake.

• The prison foundations shook.

• The doors opened.

• Everyone's chains were loosed.

18. Thanksgiving Lifts Us Out of Loneliness and Sorrow

God promised that thanksgiving and joy would replace seasons of desolation.

Thanksgiving lifts the heart from isolation, heaviness, and sorrow into fellowship, hope, and joyful expectation.

You may feel alone, but thanksgiving reminds you that God is present.

Jeremiah 30:19 - "And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make merry..."

19. Thanksgiving Is a Seal of What God Has Done

Ten lepers were healed, but only one returned to give thanks to Jesus.

Jesus asked, "Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?"

The thankful man received more than healing. Jesus told him, "thy faith hath made thee whole."

Never receive God's blessing and forget the Blesser.

Thanksgiving completes the cycle: Prayer -> Answer -> Thanksgiving -> Testimony.

WAYS OF THANKSGIVING

1. Give Thanks by Faith

Sometimes you thank God before seeing the answer.

Faith says, "I thank You because I know You are faithful."

Romans 4:20-21 - Abraham gave glory to God while fully persuaded that God was able to fulfil His promise.

2. Give Thanks Through Worship

Worship is one of the greatest expressions of thanksgiving.

Sing to Him. Praise Him. Celebrate His goodness.

Psalm 95:2 - "Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms."

3. Give Thanks Through Prayer

Every prayer should contain thanksgiving.

Do not only tell God what you need; also tell Him what you appreciate.

Philippians 4:6

4. Give Thanks Through Testimony

Tell others what God has done.

Your testimony becomes thanksgiving expressed publicly.

Psalm 105:1 - "O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people."

5. Give Thanks Through Giving

Giving can be an expression of gratitude.

When God blesses you, honour Him with your resources.

True thanksgiving should sometimes move from the lips to the hands.

2 Corinthians 9:11-12

6. Give Thanks Through Service

Serve God because you are grateful for what He has done.

Gratitude should inspire faithful service.

Do not serve God merely because you want something from Him. Serve because He has already been good to you.

Hebrews 12:28

7. Give Thanks Through Obedience

One of the greatest ways to thank God is to honour Him with an obedient life.

John 14:15 - "If ye love me, keep my commandments."

8. Give Thanks Through Holy Communion

Holy Communion causes us to remember Christ's body and blood and to proclaim His sacrifice.

We remember Calvary with gratitude.

1 Corinthians 11:23-26

9. Give Thanks in Every Season

Even when the fig tree did not blossom and the fields produced no food, Habakkuk declared, "Yet I will rejoice in the LORD..."

Mature thanksgiving is not controlled by circumstances.

Habakkuk 3:17-18

We thank God:

• In abundance.

• In scarcity.

• In victory.

• In waiting.

• In the valley.

• On the mountain.

• When we understand.

• When we do not understand.

• Because God remains God.

CONCLUSION

Thanksgiving should not be an event; it should become a lifestyle.

A thankful believer remembers that everything comes from God and continually acknowledges His goodness.

Psalm 107:1 - "O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever."

Give thanks before the miracle.

Give thanks during the battle.

Give thanks after the victory.

Give thanks when doors are open.

Give thanks while you are waiting for doors to open.

Do not allow what you are still waiting for to make you forget what God has already done.

DECLARATION

I will give thanks to the Lord at all times. I will remember His benefits. I will acknowledge Him as my source. I will praise Him in every season, and thanksgiving shall continually proceed from my mouth. Amen.
